Your driving licence
Advice from Weelz
Applying for a provisional licence
First things first, before you can even get into a car and start learning to drive, you have to get hold of a provisional driving licence
To apply for this, you must complete the application form D1 that's available from either the 'Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency DVLA form ordering service', or from your local Post Office
It takes about 4 weeks for your application to be processed and for your licence to be sent to you - so if you want to start learning as soon as you hit 17, make sure you apply early!
If you have an International Driving Permit from overseas which lasts for one year, you will still need to get a UK provisional licence before you can take your test. Note that an International Permit only allows you to drive while you are a vistor to this country
If you have a permanent address in this country you may not normally be considered to be a vistor
If you lose your photocard just before your driving test you will not be able to take the test unless you can get a replacement before the test. If you just lose the paper "counterpart" you should be able to complete a form that the Examiner will have with him at the time of your test
When you pass your test you can apply for a full driving licence. You are advised do this straight away and must do it before a year expires. With newer licences, the Examiner may keep your provisional licence and you will automatically be sent your full licence

Congratulations if you've just you passed! You can now get out on the road. Don't forget that you need to notify the DVLA and exchange your test pass certificate and provisional driving licence for a new 'Full' driving licence as soon as possible. In some cases, the examiner may ensure that this is done for you

Keep your car secure - look after your property
You need to think carefully about car theft
Take the security of your car seriously
Just look at theses figures:
At its peak in 1995 over 4.3 million crimes of theft of or from vehicles took place in England and Wales
Police figures show that for every 100,000 cars parked in a car park, 480 are targeted daily by criminals compared with 110 parked outside the home or at work
Stolen cars were believed to be up to 200 times more likely to be involved in crashes and could be used by terrorists or armed robbers for major crimes
The most frequent car theft is external items such as wheel trims, hub caps and number plates
The most frequently reported car theft is the car stereo with personal stuff, bags, clothes and briefcases running a close second
Always think about the security of your car, and never give car thieves an easy ride
