Apply for your provisional now

Are you thinking of learning to drive but reckon getting started might be a hassle?

The DVLA aims to make it easy for you!

The online service means that applying for your provisional licence is now only a few clicks away at www.direct.gov.uk/drivinglicence

This means that you no longer have to collect forms from the Post Office before sending them off to the DVLA in Swansea..

What is a provisional licence?
A provisional driving licence allows you to drive a car on public roads and will be swapped for a full driving licence when you pass both your theory and practical driving test

The earliest you can get your provisional licence is your 17th birthday. You can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday, but you'll still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test

Know your routines

Take the advice of your instructor

When you move off always use the Prepare, Observe, Move routine

You have to check all around the car by turning round to look into the blind spots. A quick look in the mirror is absolutely not enough

When the examiner asks you to stop, make sure you use the MSM routine and stop somewhere that’s Safe, Convenient and Legal

POM and MSM routine are two of the most important routines in driving, so learn them well!

Using the msm routine

msm stands for mirror signal manoeuvre . . . the msm routine should be the foundation for everything we do as responsible drivers . . . it's just as important to be aware of what's happening behind you as it is to watch for hazards in front of your vehicle!

Make sure you can apply the msm routine in every situation before you apply for your driving test, because your examiner will be watching closely to make sure that you do!
